Company Description

Liten is a major European research institute and a driving force behind the development of the sustainable energy technologies of the future. The institute is spearheading the EU’s efforts to limit dependency on fossil fuels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in three key areas: renewable energy, energy efficiency/storage and development of materials. The only European research institute to span the entire value chain from the development of materials to pre-industrialization, Liten’s unique combination of human and technological resources helps its industrial partners achieve competitive advantage through the development of cutting-edge renewable energy, energy efficiency and novel material technology. The institute builds long-term relationships with its industrial partners that range in size from SMEs to multinationals, in order to develop a wide range of technologies that include the development of new and advanced materials, components as well as the optimization/development of existing or new industrial processes. This privileged relationship with Industry sees us put in place over 400 research contracts a year.

LITEN’s Technology Platforms: sophisticated R&D tools for industry In order to reach these objectives, the institute is able to draw on the strength of 14 purpose-built technology platforms as well as over 1000 scientists, technicians and support staff. The combination of this enviable array of equipment (combined annual budget of 140M€) and the scientific expertise of Liten’s scientific teams results in a powerful R&D tool that can help overcome complex technological hurdles and help build the products, components and industrial processes of the future.

CEA Tech: adding ICT, nanotech and microelectronics into the mix Liten is part of CEA Tech, the R&D wing of the innovation giant, the CEA. Part of a triumvirate of research institutes, the complementary expertise/technological offerings of LIST (software-intensive system) and LETI (micro/nanoelectronics) strengthen Liten’s already highly-comprehensive offering.

Building energy

Buildings are responsible for more than 45 % of total energy consumption in France, making energy-plus buildings (and buildings that use very little energy) a major societal challenge. CEA Tech is responding by integrating existing technologies and studying how they interact to improve overall energy efficiency. CEA Tech researchers create energy-consumption models for entire buildings (new build and renovation projects). These models show how technologies like heat pumps, PV, and different kinds of insulation would work in synergy. The resulting data are validated on experimental houses (at the INCAS platform) that replicate the usage of a typical household. And, to help make sure that advances in building energy systems do not come at the detriment of indoor air quality, CEA Tech is also conducting R&D on ventilation and air purification.

Assets connected to the Be-Smart Project

CEA will contribute to the modelling of EPoG modules and to the outdoor performance monitoring of full size EPoG prototypes and demonstrators.

  • Development of a model of the incident light on the active layer and solar cells of specific EpoG modules with decorative front layers, with lab measurement of experimental data for validation;
  • Realization of small-scale demonstrators at CEA INES R&D facility for monitoring and evaluation;
  • Characterization of the systems multifunctionality;
  • Analysis of the performance of the full-scale demonstrators.
